York Suburban School District uses Everyday Mathematics as the core instructional program and follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to understand and apply mathematical concepts.
Throughout the year second grade students will:
  • explore numbers, number systems and relationships with numbers through 1,000 (counting by 2's, 3's, 5's, 10’s, 25's and 100's); describe inverse relationship between addition and subtraction using double digits; begin to develop concept of fractions as part of a whole - 1/6, 1/8; count, compare and make change up to one dollar using coins and dollar bills (write using decimal, dollar sign and cent sign)
  • compute and estimate (apply single-digit addition and subtraction situations to 18; add and subtract single and double digit numbers in vertical form with and without regrouping using place value; estimation with answers through 1,000)
  • demonstrate ability to measure objects and estimate objects’ measurements using U.S. customary and metric units, recognize various ways to measure an object (length, mass/weight, time, temperature, capacity, area and perimeter); tell time to the hour and five-minute intervals
  • use mathematical reasoning to verify and explain predictions about quantity, size and shape of objects and groups of objects
  • select appropriate problem solving strategies to solve problems
  • analyze statistics and data through gathering, organizing and displaying information using various charts and graphs
  • predict the likelihood of an event and verify the prediction; collect and describe data using concrete objects to show the concepts of variables, equations and inequalities; identify, describe and extend patterns based on shape, size, color or sound
  • understand and apply geometry concepts by identifying, labeling, constructing, reproducing and drawing two-dimensional geometric shapes
  • begin to develop an understanding of trigonometry concepts using right angle
