Curriculum Overview – Kindergarten
Language Arts
The Kindergarten Language Arts Curriculum follows the Pennsylvania Core Standards of teaching children to read, write, speak and listen. These skills are incorporated into a Balanced Literacy Framework including: Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing and Word Work.
Throughout the year kindergarten students will:
  • utilize book handling skills
  • demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print
  • demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes)
  • learn to read independently by using before, during and after reading strategies
  • increase ability to figure out new words through analysis of word parts and patterns
  • read emergent-reader text with purpose and understanding
  • read and apply new vocabulary
  • develop comprehension through the application of focus skills and strategies
  • actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding across all academic areas
  • with prompting and support, read all types of literature with understanding for a variety of purposes
  • write in a variety of forms such as narrative, informational and persuasive
  • learn to choose a topic and compose a writing piece
  • with guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed
  • participate in individual or shared research projects on a topic of interest
  • learn to listen and respond to others in small and larger groups

York Suburban School District follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to understand and apply mathematical concepts by implementing the Everyday Mathematics Program. Home-links will be sent home to provide enrichment and details about lessons.
Throughout the kindergarten year students will work on the following concepts:
Counting and Cardinality
  • Know number names and write and recite the count sequence
  • Apply one-to-one correspondence to tell the numberof objects
  • Apply the concept of magnitude and compare numbers and quantities
Numbers and Operations - Base Ten
  • Use place value to compose and decompose numbers within 19
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Extend the concepts of putting together and taking apart to add and subtract within 10
  • Identify and describe two-and three-dimensional shapes
  • Analyze, compare, create, and compose two-and-three dimensional shapes
Measurement and Data
  • Describe and compare attributes of length, area, weight, and capacity of everyday objects
  • Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category
  • Recognize coins; tell time to the hour

Science and Social Studies
The Kindergarten Science and Social Studies curriculums are introduced using a thematic approach. The emphasis is on exposure to many different topics and ideas.
Throughout the year, kindergarten students will be engaged in the following topics:
  • scientific method
  • seasons           
  • bodies of water
  • weather
  • nature
Social Studies
  • holidays
    • seasonal
  • cultural
  • historical figures
  • family
  • geography
    • maps/globes
    • landforms/oceans

Social and Emotional
Kindergarten recognizes the need for advancing the social and emotional growth along with the academic curriculum.
Kindergarten students will:
  • work and play cooperatively
  • assume responsibilities
  • listen attentively
  • work independently (completing tasks in a reasonable amount of time)
  • accept constructive suggestions
  • follow directions and school rules
  • works in an organized manner
