 Language Arts

York Suburban School District follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to read, write, speak and listen.  These skills are incorporated into a Balanced Literacy Framework including:  Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing and Word Work.

Throughout the year fifth grade students will:

  •  learn to read independently by using before, during and after reading strategies through reading workshop, guided reading and literature circles
  •  read and understand content in all academic areas
  •  read all types of literature and construct meaning through discussion and written responses
  • actively participate in the writing process – prewriting, drafting, editing, conferencing, revising and publishing
  • produce quality narrative, informational and persuasive writing
  • learn to listen and respond to others and to literature
  •  participate in sharing, discussions, directions, explanations, reports and oral readings
  • be able to select a topic and gather information for a research presentation


York Suburban School District uses Everyday Mathematics as the core instructional program and follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to understand and apply mathematical concepts.

Throughout the year fifth grade students will:

  • explore numbers, number systems and number relationships through millions
  •  compute and estimate – using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rounding and problem-solving
  • measure and estimate (using U.S. customary and metric units)

·        use instruments, units and standard tools to measure perimeter, volume, area, weight, length, width, time and temperature

·        estimate, refine and verify measurements

·        convert linear measurements

·        add and subtract measurements

  • use mathematical reasoning and connections to compare numbers, verify predictions, explain reasoning and make logical conclusions
  • use a variety of mathematical problem solving and communication strategies to connect solutions to other concepts in mathematics
  • nalyze statistics and data – organize, sort and display data; describe data using mean, median, mode and range; and make predictions and conclusions based on data
  • use probability and predicting – compare and explain results, express results as fractions and decimals and identify probability patterns
  • use and develop concepts of algebra, functions and calculus
  • understand and apply geometry concepts – properties of figures, shapes and solids; perimeter, area and transformations
  • use introductory concepts of trigonometry


York Suburban School District promotes the scientific process in the study and exploration of science units.

In fifth grade, students will be learning about and be provided with opportunities to complete projects in the areas of:

  •       Matter and its Properties
  •     Earth Science

-          Oceanography

-          Soil Types, Rocks, and Minerals

-          Volcanoes and Earthquake

  •    Weather
  •  The Scientific Method

 Social Studies

York Suburban School District promotes the exploration of American History and geography through reading, research, and projects.

In fifth grade, students will learn about and be provided with opportunities for related projects in the following areas:

  •    Colonization of America
  •   Causes and results of the American Revolution
  •    Development of the United States government
  •    Louisiana Purchase
  •   War of 1812
  •   California Gold Rush
  •   Causes and results of the Civil War
  •   50 states and capitals


York Suburban School District promotes the use of technology to support and enrich existing curriculum.

In fifth grade, students will be provided with opportunities to improve computer skills in the following areas:

  •  graphing/spreadsheets - formulas, setup, entering data, graphing results, labeling each axis, adding titles
  • researching - Internet, data banks and CD’s
  • word processing - justification, tabbing, margins and inserting graphics
  •  drawing - advertisements, posters
  • computer procedures - input, output and storage devices
  •  databases - setting up fields, entering data, sorting, headings and layouts
  •  grade level curriculum support software
