About Yorkshire Elementary School

Yorkshire Elementary was built in 2010 and is the first school in the district to be constructed in 38 years.  This modern facility was built on the site of the former Yorkshire School.  Parts of the former school were used in the new building.  The original entrance columns and sections of the flooring from the old school were incorporated into the auditorium's stage.  The district is pursuing LEED Gold certification form the U.S. Green Building Council.

Yorkshire Elementary is one of two buildings that houses students in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade.  Students will leave Yorkshire Elementary and finish their elementary schooling at East York Elementary.

Our school provides a balanced literacy approach to reading including instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, reading strategies, vocabulary, writing, and word work.  Our Kindergarten students become writers through Kid Writing.  We utilize the Everyday Math program that is full of fun, hands-on activities that extend children's thinking!  In addition, we offer services in learning support, reading support, speech, occupational and physical therapies, and others as needed.

The students' day begins at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m.  In addition to a regular classroom day, the students are instructed in the following related arts:  art, music, library, physical education, health and computer science.  Our school follows a six-day cycle to ensure equal time for each area and also provides coordinated planning periods for teachers.

Our school mascot is Yorkie Bear.  He is great friends with Ready Teddy, Valley View's mascot.  Yorkie, along with the Queen Bee help to teach the students proper school behavior.  Our School-Wide Positive Behavior System (SWPBS) focuses on the four "Big Bee" rules:  Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be a Worker, and Be a Friend.  Throughout the year, we have behavior celebrations that allow our children to sing songs, wear crazy outfits, and celebrate the special friendships they have made throughout the year.

We have a very active and supportive Parent's Organization.  The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) begins their role as the students first enter Yorkshire.  Each student is provided with a school T-shirt that is worn each month when we have T-shirt day.  Throughout the year, our PTO assists with numerous functions.  The PTO also funds assemblies, special hands-on activities, and trips.  Parents and guardians are encouraged to become active partners in their child's schooling at Yorkshire Elementary.
